Authentic 2007 Photo of Messi and Baby Yamal Resurfaces Ahead of World Cup Final Clash

A viral photograph showing football icon Lionel Messi bathing a infant Lamine Yamal has been confirmed as completely authentic, dismissing widespread social media speculation that the image was generated by artificial intelligence. The confirmation comes at a historic juncture, as a 39-year-old Messi and a 19-year-old Yamal are set to face each other on the pitch when Argentina and Spain battle in the World Cup final.

The photograph traces its origins back to October 2007, captured during a charity photo shoot at Camp Nou. Organized by Barcelona’s foundation and the Catalan newspaper *SPORT*, the initiative paired first-team players with local children to raise funds for UNICEF. Yamal’s family, residing in the Rocafonda neighborhood of Mataró, won a raffle to participate in the session, which coincidentally paired the three-month-old infant with a then-19-year-old Messi.

Those involved in the historic shoot recalled that Messi was notably shy and reserved during the 30-minute session, having had little to no prior experience holding infants. Photographer Joan Monfort used a plastic duck to encourage a smile from the baby, while the bathtub and towel utilized on set were brought from home. The image remained largely overlooked until Yamal’s father shared it online in 2024, shortly before the teenager rose to global prominence during Spain’s European Championship victory.

The narrative has come full circle both on and off the field. Beyond their highly anticipated World Cup final matchup, UNICEF recently confirmed that Yamal has officially been appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. The designation unites him in the same humanitarian role held by Messi since 2010, bridging a remarkable 19-year journey from a charitable photo shoot to the pinnacle of international football.
