Benue Reaffirms Commitment to IDP Resettlement, Distributes Relief Materials

The Benue State Government has restated its determination to prioritise humanitarian assistance and the sustainable resettlement of internally displaced persons across the state.

Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, James Iorpuu, made the pledge on Thursday during the distribution of food and non-food items to displaced communities.

Acknowledging that the relief supplies cannot fully restore lost homes and livelihoods, Iorpuu described the intervention as critical support to ensure temporary stability while the government pursues lasting solutions.

He assured that the distribution process adhered to principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness, with beneficiary data thoroughly verified to target those most in need.

“Government remains committed to supporting you not only with relief interventions but also with long-term recovery initiatives, including livelihood support, farming initiatives, and coordinated plans for safe return to your ancestral homes,” Iorpuu said.

“Today’s exercise reflects that unwavering commitment. Every item released is intended strictly for the IDPs.”

Items distributed included essential food supplies to address immediate nutritional needs and non-food commodities aimed at improving living conditions in camps and host communities.

Iorpuu expressed gratitude to humanitarian partners, security agencies, community leaders, camp officials, and SEMA staff, urging continued collaboration to strengthen the state’s response framework.

In January 2025, Governor Hyacinth Alia disclosed that Benue is home to approximately 1.5 million internally displaced persons. He made the remark while appealing for support from the United States Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance during a visit to Makurdi.
