Borno Police Officer Returns ₦2.6M Erroneous Transfer to Uphold Force’s Image

A police constable in Borno State has returned ₦2.6 million mistakenly sent to his bank account, stating his action was motivated by a desire to improve the public perception of the Nigeria Police Force.

The officer, Alhaji Muhammad, was publicly commended in a social media post on Friday by Bello Jafar, who praised his “exceptional integrity.” According to Jafar, Muhammad received the funds in error from a Moniepoint customer and took immediate steps to ensure its return.

The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident. Its spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, stated that Muhammad, who works in the command’s insurance office, received the unexpected credit alert last Thursday. Recognizing he was not due such a payment, he went to his bank the following morning to report the error and request that the money be returned to its rightful owner.

The bank traced the transaction to a branch in Sokoto. Muhammad subsequently signed a consent form authorizing the reversal of the funds.

Daso added that the State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajeed, invited the constable for a meeting on Monday. When asked about his motivation, Muhammad explained that as a policeman, he is aware of the negative notions many hold about the force and cited the discipline instilled during police training as the reason he chose not to claim the money.
