Channels TV Cameraman Dies Nine Days After Bauchi Accident

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, has announced the death of Kani Ben, a cameraman with Channels Television, nine days after he was involved in a road accident while on duty.

The NUJ Chairman, Umar Said, confirmed the incident to journalists in Bauchi on Sunday, expressing grief over the loss.

According to Mr. Said, Ben sustained injuries in a motor accident while covering an official assignment in Bauchi. He was among a team of journalists reporting on the commissioning and handover of projects executed by the North-East Development Commission (NEDC), alongside the Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari.

In a related development, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has condoled with the family of the deceased. In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, the governor described Ben’s death as painful and heartbreaking.

Governor Mohammed recounted that despite concerted efforts by medical personnel to save his life, the veteran cameraman died in the early hours of Sunday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH).

The governor noted that Ben died in active service, demonstrating commitment to his professional duty of keeping the public informed. He praised the deceased for his dedication, courage, and sense of responsibility, which he said were evident until his final moments.

Mohammed extended his condolences to the immediate family of the deceased, the management and staff of Channels Television, the NUJ, and the broader media community.

He prayed for the repose of Ben’s soul and encouraged his family, friends, and colleagues to find strength during this difficult period.

“The Government of Bauchi State stands in solidarity with the media community at this difficult time and reassures all of its continued respect and support for journalists who risk their lives daily in the course of their duties,” the governor stated.
