Chelsea, Man City locked in compensation dispute over Maresca move

Talks between Chelsea and Manchester City over Enzo Maresca’s potential appointment as Pep Guardiola’s successor have hit a snag due to a disagreement over compensation.
Guardiola confirmed on May 22 that he would be leaving City after a trophy-laden decade, prompting the club to identify Maresca as their top target. However, Chelsea have insisted they are entitled to a fee for the Italian coach, who left Stamford Bridge only months ago while still under contract until 2029.
According to reports on Monday, Chelsea are exploring their legal position and maintain that a financial settlement must be agreed before any move can proceed. A source from the club stated that Maresca’s contract status makes compensation obligatory.
City are eager to finalise an agreement swiftly as they prepare for life after Guardiola, but the negotiations have been slowed by the dispute over valuation and timing. Maresca, who previously served as Guardiola’s assistant during City’s Treble-winning 2022–23 season, is said to be open to a return.
The former Leicester City manager also enjoyed a successful spell at Chelsea, winning the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League. While both clubs remain in dialogue, the compensation issue remains the key obstacle, leaving the timeline for any appointment unclear.
