Christian Association Calls for Renewed Focus on Citizens’ Well-being in 2026

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a New Year message urging a national renewal centered on responsible leadership and governance that prioritizes the welfare of citizens.
In the statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association acknowledged the difficulties of the past year, noting that many Nigerians endured economic strain, insecurity, and uncertainty.
CAN emphasized that the resilience demonstrated by citizens should not be interpreted as an indication that the nation is thriving, but rather as a sign of the pressing need for tangible relief and justice.
The message stressed that ongoing national discussions about reforms and economic growth must result in measurable improvements in everyday life. “Progress must translate into lived realities,” CAN stated, pointing to affordable food, accessible healthcare, attainable education, and available work as essential markers of true development.
On the issue of security, CAN described the persistence of terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping as a serious concern that has disrupted lives and displaced communities. The association expressed hope that the government would deliver on its commitments to enhance security in the new year and called for a clear, time-bound plan to safely resettle displaced persons.
Regarding economic policy, CAN advised that fiscal and tax reforms be implemented with wisdom and fairness, cautioning against measures that could deepen hardship. It recommended targeted support for small businesses, low-income earners, and rural communities to foster an inclusive recovery.
The Christian body also addressed the need for ethical leadership, stating that national renewal requires integrity, accountability, and a commitment to service to overcome challenges like corruption and division.
CAN reaffirmed its own role in supporting the populace and sustaining hope, expressing cautious optimism that 2026 could bring healing, stability, and shared progress for Nigeria.
