Clergy and Anti-Corruption Advocate Calls for Pause on Tax Reforms

Reverend Blessed Amalambu, a faith leader and state coordinator of the National Anti-Corruption Volunteer Corps, has called on the Federal Government to postpone the implementation of Nigeria’s recently enacted tax reforms.
Speaking in Umuahia on Monday, Amalambu emphasized the need for broader public engagement and clearer consensus between government branches before the reforms take effect.
He noted that while the laws aim to modernize tax administration and boost government revenue, differing interpretations between the executive and the legislature have created uncertainty. Amalambu stressed that democratic governance requires harmony on sensitive issues such as taxation, and public confidence would be strengthened if outstanding procedural concerns are openly resolved.
Beyond legislative alignment, he questioned the timing of the reforms, citing current economic challenges, insecurity, and rising living costs. He acknowledged that well-structured tax policy could promote growth and equity but warned that weak public awareness and administrative gaps could undermine its benefits.
Amalambu urged extensive stakeholder consultations and public enlightenment campaigns to ensure Nigerians understand the reforms and can participate meaningfully in their implementation.
