Cleric Urges Otu to Drop Underperforming Appointees, Calls for Cabinet Shake-Up

The Archbishop of Calabar and Convener of the Cross River State Christian Leaders Forum, Josef Bassey, has called on Governor Bassey Otu to relieve underperforming appointees of their duties, warning that ineffective officials could hinder the administration’s progress.

Speaking in Calabar, the cleric said the state had reached a critical stage where only competent and committed individuals should occupy strategic positions in government. He noted that some appointees were not aligning with the governor’s vision and were slowing the pace of governance.

Bassey stressed that public appointments should be driven by capacity, performance and dedication to service rather than political considerations. He maintained that officials who are unable to deliver results or effectively support government programmes should be replaced with individuals capable of advancing the administration’s agenda.

According to him, the next phase of governance in Cross River requires leaders with proven competence, strong character and the ability to turn policies into tangible outcomes that benefit residents.

The cleric also cautioned against self-serving tendencies among public office holders, saying government officials should focus on promoting the interests of the state rather than personal ambitions.

While advocating changes in the cabinet, Bassey commended ongoing reforms in the state’s public service, expressing optimism that the measures would strengthen accountability and improve service delivery.

He further praised Governor Otu’s leadership and commitment to faith-based values, describing him as a leader whose emergence has renewed hope among many citizens.
