Coordinated Insurgent Attacks Rock Mali, Targeting Army Posts and Prison

Mali faced a series of coordinated attacks early Saturday as insurgent groups and separatist Tuareg fighters launched simultaneous strikes across multiple towns and a major correctional facility.

The offensive, which began at approximately 5:00 a.m. local time, marks a significant escalation in regional violence, coming just over two months after a similar wave of attacks resulted in the death of the nation’s defense minister.

Military sources and local residents reported intense fighting in the northern towns of Gao, Anefis, and Aguelhok, as well as in the central town of Sevare. According to the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a Tuareg separatist group, their fighters have overrun several military positions, though Malian army units are reportedly maintaining defensive resistance in areas like Anefis.

The violence extended to the outskirts of the capital, Bamako, where the Kenieroba prison complex which houses numerous suspected jihadist militants came under heavy fire. Prisoners inside the facility reported ongoing gunfire throughout the morning, describing a chaotic scene as security forces scrambled to respond.

In Sevare, witnesses reported loud explosions followed by extensive aerial activity, with several aircraft spotted patrolling the skies above the town.

These attacks follow a period of heightening insecurity in the north, particularly following the fall of the strategic city of Kidal to separatist forces during major offensives in late April. The current military junta, which is battling to retain control in the face of these persistent insurgencies, has yet to issue a formal statement regarding casualties or the extent of territorial losses.
