Côte d’Ivoire Certified as Youngest Squad at 2026 FIFA World Cup

FIFA has officially designated Côte d’Ivoire as the youngest competing team at the ongoing 2026 World Cup. The world football governing body highlighted the African nation’s youthful lineup through its official tournament communications, revealing that the Ivorian roster boasts the lowest average age in the competition at just 25.8 years.
The confirmation comes as the Elephants finalize preparations for their opening match in the newly expanded 48-team tournament, which is being co-hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The West African side is scheduled to face Ecuador on Monday in their group-stage opener.
Following the retirement of the iconic “Golden Generation” headlined by legends like Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré, head coach Emerse Faé has deliberately constructed a high-energy squad dominated by emerging prospects competing across major European leagues. As part of this youth-centric approach, Faé opted to omit several older veterans from the final World Cup selection, including 33-year-old forward Wilfried Zaha.
The youngest player named to the Ivorian delegation is RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande, who is only 19 years old. He anchors a generational shift within the team that features a deep contingent of players under the age of 25, including Manchester United’s Amad Diallo, Crystal Palace’s Evann Guessand, and Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande, alongside other Europe-based talents like Simon Adingra, Elye Wahi, and Bazoumana Touré.
Côte d’Ivoire leads a notable trend of youthful squads participating in this edition of the tournament. According to data tracking team demographics, the other countries fielding the youngest line-ups at the 2026 World Cup include Ecuador, Morocco, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tunisia, Spain, Norway, and South Africa, all of whom maintain squad age averages hovering around 26 years.
