Court Adjourns Trial of Anthony Joshua’s Driver Amid Prosecution’s Request for More Time

Proceedings in the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the December 2025 accident that involved British boxer Anthony Joshua, were adjourned on Tuesday following a fresh request by the prosecution to update its case file.
The matter came up before a Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, where Kayode faces charges bordering on dangerous and negligent driving.
Counsel representing the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), R.D. Kadiri, informed the court that his team had received new information earlier in the day and required additional time to incorporate it into the case file.
The application was opposed by defence counsel Abiodun Olalekan, who accused the prosecution of employing “delay tactics” and wasting judicial time.
Presiding Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun, however, granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the matter to April 16, 2026.
Tuesday’s adjournment is the latest in a series of delays that have marked the proceedings. At the last sitting on February 25, the prosecutor had also sought time to gather evidence and secure witnesses, explaining that the case had been forwarded to the Ogun State DPP for legal review.
Similarly, on January 20, police counsel Richard Nigiwe had requested an adjournment to allow for the duplication of the case file and its submission to the state Attorney-General through the DPP for legal advice.
The repeated adjournments have raised concerns from the defence, which maintains that the prosecution has yet to demonstrate readiness to proceed with the trial.
The case stems from a fatal accident on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The Lexus SUV driven by Kayode reportedly collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of two occupants, Ayodele and Ghami. Both Anthony Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries.
Kayode is facing four charges, including dangerous and negligent driving, and driving without a valid licence. He was initially remanded in custody on January 2, 2026, but was later granted bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties.
The case has continued to attract public attention due to the involvement of the high-profile boxer and the circumstances of the crash on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.
All eyes will be on the April 16 date to see if the prosecution will be ready to move forward with the trial.
