Court Issues Interim Injunction in Rivers State Governor Impeachment Process

A Rivers State High Court in Oyigbo has issued a temporary order restraining the state’s House of Assembly leadership from sending impeachment-related correspondence to the Chief Judge.

In a ruling on Friday, Justice F.A. Fiberesima granted an interim injunction preventing the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, the Clerk of the House, and 25 other lawmakers from forwarding any request or document to the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi. The order, effective for seven days, specifically bars the Chief Judge from receiving or acting on any materials aimed at constituting a panel to investigate allegations of misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu.

The ruling follows two separate suits filed by the governor and his deputy. Justice Fiberesima also granted leave for the court orders and originating processes to be served on the defendants at the Rivers State Assembly quarters and directed that the Chief Judge be served through staff at his chambers.

The case has been adjourned until January 23, 2026, for a hearing on the motion.

This legal development comes amid ongoing political tensions. The State Assembly reportedly resolved on Friday to continue with the impeachment proceedings.

Furthermore, four lawmakers who had previously withdrawn support for the impeachment process reversed their stance, accusing the governor of intransigence.
