Customs Foils Drug Trafficking Plot, Seizes N2.26bn Cannabis At Lekki Port

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Lekki Free Trade Zone Command, has intercepted 400 kilogrammes of suspected illicit drugs valued at over N2.26 billion.

The Acting Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Command, Deputy Comptroller Olufemi Kukoyi, disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday, October 15, 2026, in Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos, saying the port would never serve as a gateway for prohibited goods.

Kukoyi said that on August 19, 2026, officers of the Command intercepted a suspicious container with registration number PRSU1562064, destined for a bonded terminal outside the Command.

“Recognising the potential security implications and risks, a joint team of enforcement officers subjected it to examination,” he said.

According to him, upon thorough examination, 400 packages of Cannabis Sativa, weighing 400 kilogrammes and concealed within 798 reams of A4 printing paper, were discovered. The Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized substance was put at N2,262,960,000.

He described the seizure as a significant victory that would protect Nigerians from the devastating consequences of drug trafficking and abuse.

In line with established procedure, the illicit substance was formally handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Receiving the items, the Commander of Narcotics, NDLEA Lekki Port Area Command, Commander Jonah Achema, said the interception was a clear message to maritime drug criminals that the Command was ready to take inter-agency collaboration and the narcotics onslaught to the next level.

“The seizure being handed over today, 400 kilogrammes of Cannabis Indica from Thailand, is huge by all standards. This is coming after other phenomenal seizures in the port, such as two containers of illicit pharmaceutical opioids – Tramadol 225 and Tramaking Royal 250 – with a total weight of 46 tonnes and an estimated street value of N35 billion,” Achema said.
