Customs Service Rescues Infant Gorilla, Apprehends Trafficking Suspect in Kano

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully intercepted a wildlife trafficking operation in Kano State, leading to the rescue of an infant gorilla and the arrest of a suspect.
The operation, which took place on July 7 in the Kofar Mata area, was the result of an extensive intelligence-gathering effort. The raid was executed by the NCS Special Wildlife Office in coordination with the Customs Police Unit, the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, and wildlife conservation partners.
According to Assistant Comptroller of Customs Anuhu Mani, who oversees the NCS Special Wildlife Office, the rescued animal has been moved to a specialized facility where it is currently receiving veterinary care and rehabilitation.
“This operation is a testament to the effectiveness of intelligence-driven tactics and our ongoing collaboration with conservation stakeholders,” Mani stated. He emphasized that the raid was specifically aimed at dismantling criminal syndicates involved in the illegal trade of protected primate species within the region.
While the suspect is currently in custody, officials have declined to release their identity or further specific details regarding the raid. The NCS noted that this measure is necessary to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation and to assist in tracking other members of the trafficking network who may still be at large.
The Service reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing laws against the trade of endangered species and protecting the nation’s biodiversity. Investigations into the trafficking ring remain active as authorities work to uncover the full scope of the network’s operations.
