Dangote Refinery to Process 2.5% of Globally Traded Crude at Peak Capacity

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is projected to process roughly 2.5 percent of the world’s globally traded crude oil once operating at maximum capacity, according to details disclosed by the President and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote.

Dangote highlighted the scale of the project during an executive facility tour of the complex in Lagos, conducted alongside a delegation led by the Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Owan Enoh. The multi-billion-dollar complex comprises a 700,000 barrels-per-day petroleum refinery, a fertilizer manufacturing plant, and a petrochemical unit.

At full operational output, the refinery’s capacity will match approximately 10 percent of the total refining capacity of the United States. Reflecting on the development of the complex, Dangote noted that overcoming challenges such as supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, foreign exchange volatility, and initial skepticism from international financiers demonstrates the potential for large-scale industrial projects driven by domestic enterprise.

Addressing fiscal policy and national development, Dangote emphasized that sustainable economic expansion depends heavily on strong manufacturing infrastructure and stable, predictable government policies. He noted that domestic investment serves as the primary indicator for attracting foreign capital and stressed the importance of policy consistency over temporary tax incentives.

Minister of State for Industry John Owan Enoh described the facility as a major driver for industrial growth, noting that value addition to raw resources is critical for building a resilient national economy and supporting broad-based job creation.
