Delta Police Arraign 33 Suspects Over Yuletide Disturbances

The Delta State Police Command has arraigned 33 suspects in connection with violent disturbances and public nuisance during the just-concluded Christmas and New Year celebrations.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed that the suspects were arrested during New Year’s Eve security operations in Asaba.
Edafe clarified that the individuals were apprehended for various offences, including violent disturbances, public nuisance, drug-related activities, and conduct likely to breach public peace.
“Upon conclusion of preliminary investigations, 33 suspects were found to have prima facie cases against them and were duly charged to court and arraigned before Magistrate Court 1, Asaba,” the statement read.
Following the arraignment, the court remanded three suspects in custody, while others were granted bail pending further prosecution.
The police also addressed what they termed a “false narrative” circulating online regarding one suspect. They clarified that the individual was not arrested as a church worshipper, but was instead apprehended alongside two others in a vehicle where illicit drugs were allegedly being purchased. A suspected dealer was also arrested at the scene, and exhibits were recovered.
Edafe noted that one of the suspects, being a member of a sister security agency, was released on bail to his institution, with the assurance that his agency would ensure his court attendance.
He emphasized that “the grant of bail does not terminate investigation, nor does it imply innocence,” and assured that investigations are ongoing.
The Command urged the public to disregard “sensationalism and misinformation” aimed at undermining police operations and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and the rule of law.
