Dispatch Rider Dies in Lagos Road Incident After Alleged Extortion Attempt

A 32-year-old dispatch rider, identified as Emmanuel Jegede, has died following a road incident along the Ikotun-Idimu Road in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the incident occurred at around 10:00 a.m. near the Alhaja bus stop shortly after the rider completed a delivery. Local sources reported that two individuals attempted to forcibly stop the victim while he was in motion, causing him to lose control of his motorcycle and collide with the road median. The impact resulted in his immediate death, while those involved fled the scene.

Prior to the incident, witnesses noted that the rider had been involved in a minor collision with a tricycle driver upon exiting a nearby street. Although local bystanders helped resolve the dispute amicably, a group of individuals subsequently demanded financial compensation for mediating the issue. When the dispatch rider stated he had no cash on him, the group reportedly positioned themselves further down the road to intercept him.

Officers from the Idimu Police Division subsequently arrived at the scene to recover the victim’s body and motorcycle.

Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is underway. Adebisi noted that authorities are reviewing conflicting accounts including a claim that the rider swerved to avoid a pedestrian versus reports of physical interference by street hoodlums and are retrieving local CCTV footage to establish the sequence of events.
