DR Congo Slams Nigeria, Accuses Super Eagles of ‘Backdoor’ World Cup Bid

The football federation of the Democratic Republic of Congo has issued a stern warning to Nigeria and the Super Eagles, accusing them of attempting to qualify for the 2026 World Cup through “backdoor” means. The warning comes in response to a petition filed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with FIFA, protesting the eligibility of some DR Congo players who participated in their recent play-off clash.
The NFF had lodged a complaint alleging that between six and nine DR Congo players who switched national allegiance may not have fully complied with the eligibility requirements under Congolese law. Specifically, it is alleged that the players failed to formally renounce their previous citizenships, contrary to the Central African nation’s constitution, which does not permit dual nationality.
Despite FIFA reportedly clearing the players on the basis that they possessed valid DR Congo passports, the NFF is pursuing the matter, arguing that the process was fraudulent. DR Congo, however, has dismissed the allegations, accusing Nigeria of attempting to overturn the result through administrative means.
In a strongly-worded statement on their official X account, DR Congo’s football federation said: “If you can’t win on the pitch, don’t try to win from the back door. The World Cup must be played with dignity and confidence — not with legal tricks. Bring it on.”
The controversy has boosted Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, a tournament they had been unlikely to feature in after failing to qualify for the 2022 edition in Qatar. DR Congo, on the other hand, has been handed a bye into the final of the intercontinental play-off tournament, where they will face the winner of the semi-final between New Caledonia and Jamaica.
The DR Congo football federation has shared pictures showing some of their players who switched nationality, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, meeting with President Felix Tshisekedi, as evidence of their compliance with the rules. However, the NFF remains resolute, with General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi stating that they are waiting for FIFA to review the case, arguing that the players’ switch was not in line with DR Congo’s regulations.
