Edo, Anambra restore full representation as Senate swears-in two new lawmakers

The Nigerian Senate, during its plenary session, formally inaugurated two newly elected senators, bringing an end to the temporary vacancies that had affected the representation of the Edo Central and Anambra South Senatorial Districts.
This swearing-in ceremony marked the latest infusion of fresh political mandates into the country’s upper legislative chamber, restoring the full complement of representation for the affected regions.
The two new lawmakers, Joseph Ikpea of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), took their oaths of allegiance and office before the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and a gathering of their new colleagues.
Their induction was the direct result of by-elections recently conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill the seats that had become vacant due to distinct circumstances in each state.
For Edo Central Senatorial District, the seat was previously occupied by Senator Monday Okpebholo, who had to vacate his position following his subsequent election and swearing-in as the Governor of Edo State.
Joseph Ikpea emerged victorious in the ensuing by-election, carrying the banner of the APC to represent the district.
His arrival ensures that the people of Edo Central have an active voice in the legislative affairs of the country, picking up the mantle of service left by his predecessor who moved on to the executive arm of government.
In Anambra South Senatorial District, the vacancy arose tragically following the death of the incumbent, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. Emmanuel Nwachukwu, representing APGA, won the closely contested by-election to secure the seat.
His official entry into the Senate not only honours the electoral process but also reinstates the full legislative strength of Anambra State, allowing for a renewed focus on the development and representation of the Anambra South people in the national arena.
Speaking after the ceremony, the Senate President welcomed the new members, emphasising the significant responsibility that now rests on their shoulders.
He reminded them that their allegiance must now transcend party lines, stressing that they are no longer merely representatives of their respective political parties but senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Akpabio further assured the new senators of the cooperation and guidance of their experienced colleagues, helping them to quickly assimilate into the legislative processes and begin their crucial work of lawmaking, oversight, and effective representation for their constituents.
The successful integration of the two senators ensures the legislative body maintains its stability and capacity to address national issues without delay.
