Ekiti Government Cautions Farmers Over January Rainfall

The Ekiti State Government has issued a warning to farmers across the state regarding the current January rainfall, clarifying that it does not mark the start of the planting season.

In a statement released in Ado-Ekiti, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, advised against rushing to plant crops based on the recent showers. He emphasized that premature planting could result in significant crop losses.

Boluwade stated that the government, in partnership with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), is committed to providing reliable agro-meteorological updates. These advisories will guide farmers on optimal planting times and help manage risks associated with climate change.

He highlighted NiMet’s official role in delivering vital weather and climate information, which supports safety and economic planning, including early warnings for climate-related disasters.

This collaborative effort, co-financed by the state, aims to boost agricultural productivity, raise farmers’ incomes, and strengthen food security, especially for rural households. The focus is on adapting farming systems to climate change to ensure sustainable development.

The Commissioner praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his ongoing support to farmers and policies protecting the state’s food supply. He urged the farming community to exercise patience, follow official guidance, and await further directives from the ministry and NiMet before beginning planting activities.
