Ekiti State Announces New Textbook Policy and Maintains Ban on School Graduation Ceremonies

Ekiti State authorities have implemented new measures aimed at easing the financial pressure on families, including extended review cycles for school textbooks and a formal endorsement of book reuse.

Under the new policy, which took effect in the 2025/2026 academic session, primary school textbooks will now be reviewed once every six years. Meanwhile, the review cycle for secondary school textbooks has been lengthened from three years to four years. Both adjustments are subject to the standards set by the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).

In an effort to further reduce costs for parents and guardians, the state government has officially authorized the reuse of textbooks by younger siblings, provided that the materials remain in good condition.

Additionally, the Ministry of Education has reaffirmed that the ban on graduation ceremonies for all levels including kindergarten, nursery, primary, and secondary schools remains strictly in effect. This directive applies to both public and private institutions.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Bayode Ogunmola, stated that these measures are designed to curb the social pressures and excessive costs often associated with school ceremonies, while making quality education more accessible and affordable across the state.

The government has characterized these policies as non-negotiable and has cautioned school proprietors, administrators, and stakeholders that failure to comply with these directives will result in appropriate sanctions.
