Elon Musk Faces Backlash Over Amplification of Belfast Riot Narratives
Technology billionaire Elon Musk is facing intense scrutiny following anti-immigration riots in Belfast, after digital researchers revealed that violent narratives amplified on his social media platform, X, accumulated millions of views.
The civil unrest in the Northern Irish capital erupted following a knife attack, which led local police to charge a Sudanese national with attempted murder.
According to data compiled by the Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), a non-profit technology watchdog, Musk utilized his personal account—which commands 240 million followers—to boost anti-immigration rhetoric. Among the posts amplified were calls for continuous protests from right-wing activist Tommy Robinson and messages from Rupert Lowe, leader of the hard-right political group Restore Britain.
The CCDH report indicated that posts regarding the Belfast unrest from Musk, Robinson, and Lowe collectively generated over 115 million views. Musk’s personal account was responsible for 55% of that total, drawing approximately 64 million views.
“As the owner of X and its most-followed user, Musk has unparalleled power to shape what people see online,” said Imran Ahmed, founder and chief executive of the CCDH. “Our research shows that he used the Belfast tragedy to amplify anti-migrant narratives to millions of users, prompting endless calls for violence.”
The watchdog group further stated that the comment sections beneath these amplified posts experienced a severe spike in hostile rhetoric, identifying nearly 4,000 replies explicitly advocating for violence and crimes against immigrants.
The controversy follows a broader warning from British media regulator Ofcom regarding the heightened risk of digital platforms being used to incite hatred and provoke public disorder under United Kingdom law. X has not yet issued an official comment in response to the findings.
The public backlash coincided with a major financial milestone for Musk, who crossed into trillionaire status after a highly successful Wall Street trading debut for his aerospace company, SpaceX, which raised over $75 billion in its initial public offering.
