Escalating Political Violence Triggers Fear in Osun Ahead of Governorship Polls

Rising political violence and targeted killings have heightened fear across Osun State ahead of the upcoming August 15 governorship election. The climate of anxiety has prompted many residents and political supporters to conceal party colors, caps, and branded apparel to avoid becoming targets for political thugs and rival groups.

The upcoming contest features key contenders, including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Oyebamiji, and African Democratic Party (ADP) candidate Najeem Salaam.

Police authorities have documented at least 30 politically motivated fatalities in the state. In response, security agencies have announced a major operational deployment, committing at least four police officers to every polling unit to maintain order during the voting process.

Civil society leaders and rights advocates report that political violence has increasingly overlapped with local cult activities. Observers allege that political figures have recruited and armed cultists as thugs, creating an environment that risks suppressing voter turnout. Clashes and casualties have been heavily concentrated in areas such as Osogbo and Ijesa.

While political parties trade accusations over the source of the violence, election monitors continue to urge law enforcement to maintain strict neutrality to ensure a peaceful electoral outcome.
