Ex-Councillor Shot Dead as Gunmen Attack Plateau Community

A former councillor of Rim Ward in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, Daniel Danjuma Chong popularly known as ‘Hon. Star’ has been killed following a late-night attack on Torok village.

The assault occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026. According to local residents, the attackers stormed the village under the cover of darkness and opened fire, triggering panic as villagers fled into hiding. Chong was fatally shot during the incident, while another resident, identified as David Danjuma, sustained severe gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Condemning the incident, the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) described the assault as a tragic attack on innocent residents. In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the association urged security forces and the Plateau State Government to launch an immediate manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators.

The group also reiterated its call for heightened security presence in vulnerable communities, the dismantling of criminal hideouts in the area, and strict enforcement of regulations targeting illegal activities exploited by armed groups.
