Experts Outline Strategies to Manage Social Media Use

As digital connectivity grows, health professionals are highlighting concerns over excessive social media engagement and offering practical steps to foster healthier online habits.
Social media platforms have become integral tools for communication, education, and information sharing globally. However, specialists note that for some individuals, use can become problematic, resembling behavioural addiction. This is often marked by an uncontrollable urge to frequently check platforms, excessive time spent online, and negative impacts on daily life, relationships, and mental well-being.
According to resources such as the Addiction Centre, compulsive social media use can trigger the brain’s reward system in ways comparable to other addictive behaviours. While most people use social media without issue, estimates suggest a single-digit percentage of users may experience patterns consistent with addictive behaviour.
To help individuals regain balance, experts recommend several manageable strategies:
· Set Time Limits: Using phone settings or dedicated apps to schedule specific periods for social media can help prevent endless scrolling.
· Manage Notifications: Turning off non-essential alerts reduces the constant prompts to check devices, allowing for more intentional engagement.
· Take Breaks: Temporarily removing social media apps from a phone for several weeks can help reset habits and decrease dependency.
· Cultivate Offline Interests: Engaging in hobbies, sports, or learning new skills in the physical world can shift focus and enrich life beyond the screen.
· Establish Tech-Free Zones: Creating rules, such as no devices during meals or in bedrooms, can encourage presence and improve personal interactions.
Psychologist Dayo Courson and tech consultant Abisola Olatunde, who contributed these recommendations, emphasize that the goal is mindful usage rather than complete elimination. They note that developing offline connections and activities is crucial for maintaining social well-being and reducing over-reliance on digital platforms.
