Explosion hits Defence Industries factory, one casualty recorded, many injured
An explosion has rocked the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) facility in Kaduna State on Saturday, leaving one person d3ad and many others injured.
The incident occurred at the corporation’s factory within the Kakuri Industrial Layout, sparking panic across the city.
Residents said the deafening sound of the blast echoed through many parts of Kaduna metropolis, with strong tremors felt particularly in Chikun and Kaduna South Local Government Areas. Eyewitnesses described the explosion as “terrifying,” noting that nearby houses and shops shook violently as the ground vibrated.
According to emergency sources, one casualty has been confirmed, while multiple victims sustained injuries of varying severity. The injured were quickly evacuated to nearby medical centres, including the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Although the exact cause of the explosion is still unknown, preliminary reports suggest that the blast originated from within the production section of the factory. Security operatives and emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to the scene to cordon off the area, manage the situation, and prevent further casualties.
Authorities are expected to conduct a full-scale investigation to determine the trigger of the blast and assess the level of damage to the facility.
The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, established in 1964, is the country’s state-owned arms manufacturing company, responsible for producing weapons, ammunition, and other military hardware. Its strategic role in national security has made the Kakuri plant one of the most sensitive facilities in Northern Nigeria.
The incident has renewed public concerns over safety measures at military and industrial complexes, with residents urging the government to ensure stronger regulatory oversight and improved emergency preparedness in case of such disasters in the future.
