Explosion Rocks Lagos Market After IED Detonates Under Vehicle

Police in Lagos State have launched an investigation after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated under a parked vehicle at a market in the Mushin area on Monday, leaving one person injured.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, confirmed that the blast occurred when the vehicle’s engine was started, triggering the device which had been concealed beneath the passenger side. Emergency response teams, including Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts, were immediately deployed to secure the scene and conduct a comprehensive sweep of the area.
Authorities reported that one individual sustained injuries in the incident and has been hospitalized in stable condition. Following a thorough investigation of the site, EOD experts confirmed that no further explosive devices were present, allowing the police to declare the commercial area safe for normal activities.
The incident was first reported in the early hours of the morning. Local community leader Tajudeen Faronbi, the Baale of Oke Mushin, noted that the vehicle’s ownership remains unknown, as it appeared to have been left in the market area before the detonation. He praised the swift reaction of security agencies, stating that the prompt mobilization of dozens of officers helped stabilize the situation and prevented mass panic among residents and traders.
Police officials have recovered remnants of the device for forensic analysis as part of ongoing efforts to identify those responsible. Commissioner Tijani urged the public to remain calm, dismissing rumors of widespread insecurity and reiterating the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order across the state.
