FAAN Appeals for Patience Over Traffic Congestion on First Day of Go Cashless Programme

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has urged motorists and airport users to exercise patience following traffic congestion at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on the first day of its nationwide Go Cashless programme.
In a post on its X handle on Sunday, FAAN explained that the gridlock resulted from many drivers attempting to register for the new Go Cashless cards at the toll gates, despite prior notices and publicity encouraging early registration at designated offices.
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria sincerely appreciates all motorists and airport users as the Go Cashless Programme officially comes into full operation today at MMIA and NAIA, in line with the Federal Government’s directive on cashless transactions,” the statement read.
“We acknowledge the traffic build-up experienced at the access gates today. Despite the wide publicity, notices, and repeated announcements issued ahead of the commencement date, a significant number of motorists opted to register for their Go Cashless cards at the gates this morning.”
FAAN acknowledged the temporary delays, noting that initial adjustment challenges are normal during major system transitions. The authority said it has deployed additional personnel, increased registration points, and enhanced on-ground coordination to ease traffic flow.
The Go Cashless initiative prohibits cash payments at access gates, car parks, and executive lounges, aligning with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s drive to promote digital transactions. The programme, piloted since late 2025 in Lagos and Abuja in partnership with Paystack, aims to improve processing speed, transparency, and operational efficiency while reducing risks associated with cash handling.
FAAN advised motorists to obtain Go Cashless cards at FAAN commercial offices, access gates, or participating bank branches and to plan ahead for future visits. The authority reassured the public that ongoing monitoring and adjustments will ensure smoother operations in the coming days.
“We appeal for your patience, understanding, and cooperation as we work diligently to stabilise and streamline the process,” FAAN said, reiterating its commitment to providing a safe, efficient, and world-class airport experience.
