Family, Associates Honor Late Access Bank Chief Herbert Wigwe on Posthumous 60th Birthday

Family members, friends, and business associates have gathered to honor the memory of the late former Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank, Dr. Herbert Wigwe, marking what would have been his 60th birthday.

Dr. Wigwe, who passed away on February 9, 2024, was remembered for his transformative impact on Africa’s financial sector and his extensive contributions to education, healthcare, and youth empowerment.

As the former Co-CEO of Access Bank and CEO of Access Holdings, Wigwe played a central role in expanding the bank from a local institution into a prominent multinational financial services group. Beyond his corporate leadership, he served as Chairman of the Bankers’ Committee, collaborating with government officials and regulatory bodies to address broader economic challenges and foster national development.

His philanthropic work was largely driven through The HOW Foundation, established in 2016. The initiative focused on providing educational support to underserved communities including projects in Makoko and for Almajiri children as well as funding specialist medical training and adopting 25 primary healthcare centers across Rivers State.

Wigwe’s vision for social development also led to the founding of Wigwe University, alongside youth leadership initiatives such as the Fearless Leadership Series and the Wigwe Venture Lab, both designed to equip the next generation of African leaders.

Supporters and colleagues noted that while his life was cut short, the institutions, opportunities, and educational programs he established continue to build on his vision for the continent.
