Father and Son Arrested for Illegal Firearm Possession in Bayelsa
The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 68-year-old man and his 36-year-old son for the alleged illegal possession of four single-barrel guns.
The suspects, identified as Tibi Friday and his son, Oyabrade Tibi, were apprehended on the Igbogene–Tombia Expressway in Yenagoa during a routine stop-and-search operation conducted by the police Anti-Vice Unit on July 6.
According to police reports, the pair were traveling in a commercial tricycle heading toward Abua in neighboring Rivers State when officers intercepted the vehicle. During the search, police discovered the four firearms concealed inside a sack covered with sticks, an attempt they believe was intended to evade detection.
The Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, confirmed the arrests, noting that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yenagoa. Investigators are currently working to determine the source of the weapons and investigate any potential accomplices involved in the case.
The Command has reaffirmed its commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms within the state. Police authorities are also encouraging the public to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information to assist security agencies in maintaining public safety.
