FCT Administration Considers Restrictions on Motorcycles and Tricycles in Abuja City Centre

The Federal Capital Territory Administration is preparing to restrict the operations of commercial motorcycles (Okada) and tricycles (Keke Napep) within the Abuja city centre to address rising security concerns and urban traffic management.

Speaking during a televised media briefing on Tuesday, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike stated that the proposed restrictions follow recommendations from the FCT Security Council after intelligence reports linked motorcycles to criminal activity and logistics for armed groups.

Wike disclosed that security agencies have been directed to map out specific zones within the metropolitan area where commercial two- and three-wheelers will be prohibited. He clarified that while a complete, territory-wide ban is unfeasible due to transit needs across peripheral communities, strict limits will be enforced within central districts.

Additionally, the Minister highlighted ongoing difficulties with urban management in the capital, particularly regarding street begging. Wike noted that evacuation and relocation programs face recurring hurdles due to Abuja’s central geography and proximity to neighboring states, leading to repeated influxes of vulnerable populations despite government intervention efforts.
