Federal High Court Removes Labour Party Chairman, Upholds Caretaker Committee

A Federal High Court in Abuja has removed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party. In a judgment delivered on Wednesday, Justice Peter Lifu ruled that Abure’s tenure had elapsed and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise a caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman.
The court held that the Usman-led committee is the party’s valid authority until a national convention is held. This decision aligns with a recent Supreme Court judgment, which had earlier set aside an appellate court’s recognition of Abure’s leadership.
The party’s National Executive Committee had previously resolved to remove Abure at a stakeholders’ meeting hosted by Abia State Governor Alex Otti and chaired by former presidential candidate Peter Obi. Abure’s legal challenge to retain his position has now been dismissed by the court.
