FG, Kaduna Govt intensify collaboration to deliver $754b Abuja-Kano highway

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, and the Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, have amplified their commitment to fast-track the completion of the strategic $754 billion Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway.

This renewed focus, following a high-level meeting in Abuja, underscores the administration’s resolve to deliver this critical infrastructure project, which has faced significant delays since its inception.

The highway is a vital economic artery connecting the Federal Capital Territory with the commercial hubs of the North-West, and its timely completion is seen as essential for stimulating economic growth and enhancing regional security.

​During the meeting, Minister Umahi reassured Governor Sani that the project, a priority under the “Renewed Hope” agenda of President Bola Tinubu, would be completed within a record time, with a directive to deliver a substantial part of the project within the next one year. The Minister detailed a new, sectional approach to the construction to accelerate progress.

For instance, he noted that the project is now structured to involve multiple major firms, with portions of the work to be executed using concrete pavement technology for enhanced durability and longevity, a signature standard championed by the current Minister of Works.

​Governor Sani, on his part, lauded the Federal Government’s dedication to infrastructural development across the country. He emphasised the importance of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway, along with other key regional projects like the Eastern Bypass in Kaduna and the Mando-Birnin Gwari Road, in transforming the socio-economic landscape of the North.

The Governor’s commitment is pivotal in ensuring local support and addressing potential security concerns that previously hampered the project’s progress.

He expressed satisfaction with the new construction strategy, anticipating that the deployment of multiple, capable contractors on different sections of the highway will eliminate bottlenecks and ensure the set completion deadline is met.

The collaborative spirit between the Federal Ministry of Works and the Kaduna State Government reinforces the national commitment to deliver a world-class, durable road that will serve as a lasting legacy for the region.
