FG Moves to Revamp 13 Police Training Institutions Nationwide

The Federal Government has begun the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions across Nigeria in a renewed effort to strengthen security operations and improve the capacity of law enforcement personnel.

The initiative was unveiled at the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, and chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Speaking at the meeting, Shettima urged government officials to remain committed to ongoing reforms, stressing that policies must deliver visible benefits to citizens through job creation, increased purchasing power, stronger businesses and improved living standards.

He noted that continuity in policy implementation remains crucial to achieving lasting results, adding that public confidence is built when governments follow through on their promises.

Providing an update on the rehabilitation programme, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, disclosed that contracts had been awarded for the upgrade of the 13 police training institutions, with the majority of contractors already receiving their award letters.

He said the three-week intervention is designed to prepare the facilities for the commencement of training and retraining programmes for police personnel, while efforts are being intensified to ensure the prompt release of funds for the projects.

According to Aiyedatiwa, improving police training infrastructure is essential to equipping officers with the skills and knowledge required to tackle the country’s evolving security challenges.

Enugu State Deputy Governor, Ifeanyi Ossai, said the Federal Government had assured the council that outstanding funds for the contractors would be released shortly, enabling work to proceed without delays.

He emphasised that the rehabilitation exercise forms part of a broader plan to sustain the training and retraining of security personnel, noting that effective policing depends on a well-trained workforce supported by citizens through cooperation and information sharing.

The council also received a briefing on the state of the economy, with officials highlighting Nigeria’s recent reclassification as a frontier market by global index provider FTSE Russell. The development is expected to enhance the country’s attractiveness to foreign investors and expand access to international capital.

Economic updates presented to the council pointed to improvements in growth, inflation, foreign reserves and government revenue, while agriculture, manufacturing, energy, mining and the digital economy were identified as key sectors for accelerated expansion.

In addition, the council approved the Revised National Social Protection Policy for 2026–2030 and endorsed the reconstitution of a National Social Protection Council to coordinate welfare programmes and strengthen support for vulnerable Nigerians.

Council members maintained that sustained reforms, improved security and stronger social protection measures remain critical to driving economic growth and improving the welfare of citizens across the country.
