Five Arrested in Nnewi for Illegal Revenue Collection

The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service has apprehended five individuals accused of illegally collecting money from tricycle operators in Nnewi.
The suspects, identified as Edwin Okonkwo, Sunny Obasi, Christian Oziri, Christian Chinedu, and Nnamdi Nworie, were reportedly caught collecting sums between N300 and N500 from riders at various locations in the area.
Parading the suspects in Awka on Saturday, the AIRS Special Commander, Nathan Obikwelu, stated that their actions violated a state law prohibiting unauthorized revenue collection from tricycle and commercial bus operators.
Obikwelu emphasized that the arrest aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s directive to end illegal cash collections across Anambra State.
“The state government condemns this act entirely and assures that the suspects will be prosecuted and remanded in prison,” he stated.
This incident follows a similar operation in Onitsha last month, where four persons were arrested for allegedly collecting unauthorized fees from tricycle riders.
