FRSC cautions motorists on speed, potholes as rainy season intensifies

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State has called on drivers to reduce their speed and exercise patience when navigating potholes on highways, warning that failure to do so could lead to avoidable crashes during the rainy season.

Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi made the appeal on Monday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota.

According to Ogunjobi, wet roads become slippery, and high speed reduces a driver’s ability to maintain control of the vehicle, especially in rainy conditions.

He advised motorists to keep double or even triple the usual distance between their vehicles and the one ahead, allowing more time for braking when necessary.

“The FRSC is appealing to motorists to apply common-sense speed limits by reducing their speed below the posted limit when it rains,” Ogunjobi said.

He also urged drivers to exercise extreme caution and carry out proactive vehicle maintenance to prevent unnecessary loss of lives.

The sector commander stressed the importance of checking worn-out tyres and ensuring vehicles are weather-ready by inspecting essential components such as windscreen wipers before any journey.

He warned that worn-out wiper blades should be replaced immediately to maintain clear visibility on the road.

Ogunjobi further noted that headlamps, brake lights, braking systems, and indicators must all be in proper working condition to stay safe during heavy downpours.

He also advised motorists to avoid flood-prone areas and to never attempt crossing running water or flooded roads.

If rainfall becomes so heavy that visibility is severely reduced, drivers are advised to park safely off the road and wait for the rain to ease, he added.

Ogunjobi recalled that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) had predicted a variable rainfall pattern for 2026, with Ogun State expected to experience a longer rainy season.

He noted that recent alerts from the Federal Ministry of Environment had also listed Ogun among states at risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding during the period.
