Governor Aiyedatiwa Assents to New Electricity Law to Boost Ondo Power Sector

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has signed into law the Ondo State Electric Power Sector (Amendment) Law 2026, creating a comprehensive legal and regulatory framework to govern electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across the state.

The legislation establishes the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Commission to oversee tariffs, licensing, mini-grids, and renewable energy ventures. It also provides for a State Independent System Operator and Market Operator to foster a competitive energy market.

Key provisions mandate universal metering, safeguard community and privately funded electrical assets, and introduce strict legal penalties for equipment vandalism and power infrastructure sabotage. Additionally, the new law creates the Equipment Standards and Competence Certification Agency to regulate technical equipment quality and certify sector professionals.

State officials confirmed that the updated framework is structured to restore investor confidence, encourage private capital, and expand off-grid and renewable energy solutions to accelerate industrialization across Ondo State.
