Armed attackers have killed the chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Rantan Ward, Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, and another resident during a late-night assault on the community.
The victims, identified as Garba Buba and Sulaiman Zunduma, were reportedly shot when gunmen invaded Rantan on Sunday night, unleashing terror on residents and forcing many families to flee their homes.
Community sources said the attackers opened fire indiscriminately after entering the area. Buba was said to have sustained gunshot wounds at his residence and later died while receiving treatment, while Zunduma was killed during the attack.
The incident has thrown the community into mourning, with residents expressing concern over the recurring security threats facing the area.
The latest attack comes amid growing fears over violent crimes in parts of Kano State. It also followed another security incident in Garun Mallam Local Government Area, where armed men reportedly abducted a prominent community leader before he was rescued through a coordinated response by security personnel and local residents.
Authorities are yet to provide full details on the Rantan attack, including the identities of those responsible. However, security operatives are expected to intensify efforts to track down the assailants and prevent further attacks.
Residents have called for stronger security presence across vulnerable communities, urging authorities to take decisive action against criminal elements threatening lives and property.
The renewed violence has further heightened concerns about safety in rural communities, with many residents demanding sustained security operations to curb the activities of armed groups.
