Imo Governor’s Sponsorship of INEC Officials’ Pilgrimage Draws Criticism

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State is facing significant public criticism over reports that his administration sponsored a pilgrimage to Jerusalem for officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to earlier reports, the planned delegation included the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Sylvia Agu, three departmental heads, and 27 electoral officers. A send-off ceremony was reportedly held at the Government House Chapel in Owerri.

The arrangement has sparked a debate about electoral integrity and the perceived independence of INEC, which is legally required to operate free from political influence. Critics argue that such sponsorship from a sitting governor could undermine public confidence in the electoral body’s neutrality, especially with the 2027 general elections approaching.

Public affairs commentator Casmir Nweze, reacting from Owerri, described the move as a compromise and called for sanctions against the involved INEC officials. He linked the governor’s action to a broader context of political strategy and insecurity in the state.

The pilgrimage was later called off amid the growing controversy. Reports indicated the state government had allocated substantial funds for the trip, though these details have not been officially confirmed.

Governor Uzodimma, who assumed office in 2020 following a Supreme Court ruling that overturned the initial 2019 election results, has yet to publicly address the backlash. His tenure has been marked by political contention, with past elections in the state also drawing scrutiny.

The incident raises questions about the boundaries between state governments and federal electoral institutions, with analysts calling for clearer guidelines to protect the umpire’s impartiality.
