Israeli Authorities Arrest Suspect in Iranian Espionage Case
Israeli authorities have announced the arrest of a 40-year-old Israeli man suspected of committing security offenses under the direction of Iranian intelligence agents.
The arrest, made this month in a joint operation by Israeli police and Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic intelligence agency, is the latest in a series of cases where Israel has charged its own citizens with spying for Iran since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023.
The suspect, residing in Rishon LeZion, was identified as having conducted photography near the home of former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.
He allegedly transferred photographs taken in his city and other locations to Iranian handlers in exchange for money. The suspect was instructed to purchase a dash camera to carry out the task, according to a joint police and Shin Bet statement.
This arrest follows the execution of an Iranian citizen convicted of spying for Israel, announced by Iran last week. The long-standing adversaries, Iran and Israel, have regularly accused each other of espionage. In May, Israel arrested an 18-year-old Israeli for spying on Bennett, marking another instance of Iranian espionage attempts.
The recent tensions between Iran and Israel escalated in June with Israel launching strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, prompting Iran to respond with drone and missile strikes.
The United States later joined Israel in targeting Iranian nuclear facilities during the 12-day conflict. Israeli authorities arrested two citizens suspected of working for Iranian intelligence services during this period.
Iran, which does not recognize Israel, has long accused it of conducting sabotage operations against its nuclear facilities and assassinating its scientists.
