Journalism Icon Yakubu Mohammed Laid to Rest in Kogi

Veteran journalist and co-founder of Newswatch magazine, Yakubu Mohammed, was laid to rest on Thursday in Ologba, Anyigba, Kogi State. He died on Wednesday at the age of 75 after a brief illness.

The burial was attended by family, religious leaders, and community members. In his sermon, the Chief Imam of the area highlighted Mohammed’s faith and commitment to community development.

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, mourned the late journalist, describing him as a pioneer of modern investigative journalism whose work strengthened democracy and accountability in Nigeria.

The Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Guild of Editors also paid tribute, praising Mohammed’s courage, professionalism, and lasting impact on the media industry.

He co-founded Newswatch in the 1980s alongside Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Dan Agbese.
