JRB pushes for swift passage of taxes bill

The Joint Revenue Board (JRB) has urged Nigerian states to fast-track the passage of the Harmonised Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Bill, a crucial legislation aimed at standardizing taxes, rates, and levies at the sub-national level. This call to action was made during the JRB’s 158th meeting in Abuja, where the board also discussed its transition into the Joint Revenue Board, a move expected to enhance national revenue administration and tax compliance.
According to Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, the proposed law is a key component of Nigeria’s ongoing tax reforms, seeking to create a more efficient and coordinated framework for revenue collection. The JRB believes that with this law in place, collaboration among revenue authorities will improve, and tax compliance will increase, ultimately boosting the country’s revenue generation.
The board’s appeal to states is seen as a significant step towards achieving a more streamlined and harmonized tax system, which is expected to have a positive impact on Nigeria’s economic development.
