Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Officially Returns to APC

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has formally rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) under which he was elected in 2023.
The defection ceremony took place on Monday at the Kano Government House, where he was received by prominent APC figures including former governor Abdullahi Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.
Governor Yusuf stated that his return to the APC was driven by a desire to work more closely with the federal government under President Bola Tinubu to advance development in Kano. He emphasized that the move was a collective decision made alongside his cabinet, the majority of the state assembly members, and all 44 local government chairmen.
“After wide consultations and careful reflection, I have joined the party I believe is better for Kano,” Yusuf said. He described the move as necessary to align with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and to end what he termed “isolation politics.”
The governor asserted that the decision was based on state interest, not personal gain, and was aimed at fostering peace, unity, and accelerated development. He also expressed continued gratitude to his former supporters.
APC State Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, welcomed the move, pledging the party’s support to the governor’s administration and stating that Kano was now positioned to collaborate effectively with the federal government.
This defection marks a significant shift in Kano’s political landscape, with the ruling party at the national level now also holding the governorship in the state.
