Kano: Kwankwaso’s Son, Four Other Ex-Commissioners Sue State Government Over Vehicle Recovery

Five former commissioners in Kano State have filed a suit at the National Industrial Court challenging the forceful recovery of their official vehicles by state anti-corruption operatives.

The plaintiffs, including Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso son of NNPP leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are seeking legal redress over the actions of the Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission.

The ex-commissioners resigned en masse following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress in January.

Those involved in the legal action are Nasiru Sule Garo (former Commissioner for Special Duties), AVM Ibrahim Umar (retired, former Commissioner for Internal Security), Adamu Aliyu Kibiya (former Humanitarian Affairs Commissioner), Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata (former Science and Technology Commissioner), and Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso (former Youth and Sports Commissioner).

Court documents obtained by Daily Trust showed that AVM Umar filed suit number NICN/KN/14/2026 against the Attorney General of Kano State and two others.

His lawyers alleged that operatives of the PCACC forcibly entered his residence on February 26, disturbing his family and seizing his vehicle. The claimant is demanding the immediate return of the vehicle and full disclosure of those involved in the raid.

In a joint statement signed by AVM Umar on behalf of all affected ex-commissioners, the group accused the state government of exhibiting a “vindictive attitude” and engaging in intimidation tactics.

They argued that under the Revised 2023 Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission Act, official vehicles form part of the legitimate entitlements of political officeholders.

The statement recalled that Ibrahim Ali Namadi, a former transport commissioner who resigned earlier, was permitted to retain his official vehicle, insisting they deserved similar treatment.

The ex-commissioners further alleged that government agents not only seized official vehicles but also evacuated personal cars belonging to their spouses while they were away from home.

“Our personal liberty and sanctity of our family members were grossly violated,” the statement read, describing the operation as an attempt to embarrass and silence opposition voices.

The PCACC Chairman, Saidu Yahaya, had earlier confirmed that the recovery exercise was conducted with a valid court order after the former officials ignored repeated directives to return the vehicles.

However, the ex-commissioners insist the matter requires judicial interpretation and have urged their supporters to remain calm pending the outcome of the legal process.

The development has heightened political tensions in Kano, where Governor Yusuf’s defection and subsequent cabinet resignations have widened divisions between the ruling APC and loyalists of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
