Kano Launches Plan to Rehabilitate 10,000 Drug Users, Tackle Crime and Addiction

The Kano State Government has announced a large-scale rehabilitation programme targeting 10,000 drug users within the next 12 months as part of efforts to combat substance abuse and its growing impact on public safety.

The initiative will focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment, offering individuals struggling with addiction an opportunity to recover, acquire vocational skills, and reintegrate into society as productive citizens.

Under the programme, participants will undergo detoxification and counselling before being enrolled in structured rehabilitation schemes designed to address the causes and effects of drug dependence. They will also receive training in various trades to improve their chances of securing employment or starting small businesses.

Government officials said the intervention is aimed at reducing the prevalence of drug abuse among young people, while also addressing related issues such as violent crime, unemployment, and social instability.

The programme will include partnerships with correctional facilities, security agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure that individuals recovering from addiction receive the support needed to rebuild their lives. Authorities believe the combination of treatment, skills acquisition, and economic empowerment will provide a more lasting solution to the challenge.

Officials added that beneficiaries will be assessed based on their individual circumstances, with rehabilitation and reintegration measures tailored to their needs. The approach is expected to offer alternatives to incarceration for some offenders while helping others overcome addiction before it leads to criminal behaviour.

Beyond addressing substance abuse, the government believes the initiative will contribute to economic development by creating a workforce equipped with practical skills and better employment prospects.

The state described the programme as one of its most ambitious social intervention efforts, expressing confidence that collaboration among government institutions, community leaders, and private sector partners will help achieve its goal of reducing drug dependence and restoring hope to thousands of affected youths.
