Kano Security Commissioner Resigns Amid Political Tensions Following Governor’s Defection

Kano State’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, Ibrahim Umar, has resigned from his position, citing strained relations between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his political mentor, Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso. His resignation brings to four the number of commissioners who have stepped down since the governor defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday.

In a resignation letter released to the press on Monday evening, Umar expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve but stated that, after careful consideration, he believed stepping aside was in the best interest of the state.

“My service in these roles has been guided by the enduring principles of our leader and mentor, His Excellency, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the Kwankwasiyya Movement,” Umar wrote.

He is the latest senior official to resign following Governor Yusuf’s highly publicized move to the APC. Others who have relinquished their appointments include the commissioners for Humanitarian Services, Sports and Youth Development the latter being Senator Kwankwaso’s son and the former head of Tertiary Education and Science. The Director General of the State Pilgrims Welfare Board has also resigned.

Governor Yusuf formally joined the ruling party at a ceremony in Government House, Kano, on Monday, a political shift that continues to trigger realignments within the state’s administration.
