Kenyan Students to Face Murder Charges Over Deadly Dormitory Fire

Kenyan prosecutors announced on Tuesday that they will formally charge several students in connection with a dormitory fire that claimed the lives of 16 schoolmates in May.

The tragedy occurred shortly after midnight on May 28 at the Utumishi Girls’ School in Gilgil, located approximately 100 kilometers north of Nairobi. In addition to the 16 fatalities victims aged between 15 and 18 the incident left 132 others injured. The school primarily serves the children of police officers.

Following a thorough review of the evidence, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions confirmed the decision to move forward with murder charges. While officials declined to specify the exact number of students being charged due to their status as minors, it was confirmed that the suspects will each face 16 counts of murder when they appear in court, which is expected to occur on Wednesday.

The incident is part of a troubling surge in school-related fires across Kenya. Reports indicate that the Kenyan Red Cross has recorded at least 47 such fires in 2026 alone. The frequency of these disasters has prompted many boarding schools across the country to send students home as a precautionary measure.

Analysts have linked the trend to various factors, including the potential for copycat incidents and deep-seated frustrations regarding the country’s high-pressure and under-resourced education system.
