Kwankwaso Dumps NNPP, Set to join ADC

Former Governor of Kano State and National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is set to formally defect from the party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

Kwankwaso will join the ADC on Monday at an event to be held at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, in Kano State.

The development follows a high-level consultation by Kwankwaso with former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, at his residence in Abuja.

Kwankwaso disclosed that the meeting, held on Saturday, was a “productive discussion” aimed at forging a common front to reposition Nigeria on the right trajectory, a statement that has since fuelled speculation about a broader political alliance ahead of future elections.

The planned defection was earlier confirmed by the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Kwankwaso’s loyal political base, which announced that the former Kano governor would officially join the ADC and complete his registration with the party on Monday.

A statement by the spokesman of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr. Habibu Mohammed, disclosed that all members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement have been directed to proceed and register with the ADC.

The statement reads: “In furtherance of this decision, he will officially register with the party on Monday, March 30, 2026, at his residence, Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Kano, by 12pm.

“Consequently, all members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement are hereby directed to proceed and register with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in their respective wards, local government areas, and states immediately thereafter”.

The statement also urged supporters to fully engage in all party activities and contribute actively toward the growth, development, and success of the party at all levels.

“This strategic decision, as always, has been taken in the best interest of the movement, our state, and the nation at large. It reflects our unwavering commitment to the advancement of democratic values, good governance, and the collective aspirations of the people.”

“We emphasise that democracy must be protected, and the will of the people must always be respected. The Kwankwasiyya Movement remains resolute, united, and committed to building a better and more inclusive Nigeria”.

Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the NNPP in the 2023 general elections, remains one of the most influential political figures in northern Nigeria, particularly in Kano State, where his Kwankwasiyya movement commands a strong grassroots following.

Political observers say his move to the ADC, coming shortly after his meeting with Atiku, signals intensifying efforts among opposition leaders to build a united front capable of challenging the ruling party in the 2027 general election.

While details of the discussions between the two political heavyweights were not fully disclosed, the timing of the visit and the imminent defection have added momentum to ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition space.
