Kwara: APC Youths Reject Speaker’s Governorship Bid

A youth group within the All Progressives Congress has warned the party leadership against fielding the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Salihu, as its governorship candidate in the 2027 election, arguing that such a move could cost the ruling party its grip on the state.
The group, Progressives Youth of the APC, issued the warning on Friday during a press briefing at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, amid growing speculation over possible successors to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who will complete his constitutionally allowed second term in 2027.
Addressing journalists, the group’s leader, Segun Adewara, said the APC should prioritise electoral viability over political calculations if it intends to retain power in Kwara.
“We are committed to the peace and progress of our party and do not want the APC to lose its footing in Kwara. What we are saying is simple: if the party wants to win in 2027, it must present a candidate that is acceptable to the people. The current Speaker cannot guarantee that victory,” Adewara said.
