Lagos Achieves 89% Child Vaccination Coverage, Announces Mop-Up Campaign

The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board has announced that approximately 89% of children targeted in its recent state-wide immunisation campaign have been vaccinated.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Board commended the coverage rate but confirmed it will now conduct a mop-up exercise to reach children missed during the initial drive. These may include children who were absent, had relocated, or were not vaccinated due to misinformation or logistical issues.

The Permanent Secretary of the Board, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, attributed the high turnout to strong collaboration between government agencies, health workers, community leaders, development partners, and parents.

“Vaccinating 89% of our targeted children clearly shows that Lagosians understand the importance of immunisation. This success is commendable, but the journey is not over. Every child matters, and we are determined to leave no eligible child unprotected,” Mustafa stated.

He explained that the mop-up phase will involve house-to-house visits, community outreach, and enhanced services at health facilities to ensure all missed children receive the necessary vaccines.

Mustafa reassured the public that routine immunisation in the state is safe, effective, and free, with all vaccines meeting national and international safety standards. He emphasized that vaccines protect children from serious diseases such as measles, polio, diphtheria, whooping cough, and tuberculosis.

The Permanent Secretary also called on parents, community leaders, and influencers to support the final push by encouraging families to present their children and by helping to dispel any misinformation.

The Board reaffirmed its commitment to achieving optimal immunisation coverage in line with the state’s THEMES Plus health agenda and global best practices.
